What Changed in Google's AI Mode for Travel
Travel planning has always involved juggling multiple tabs, loyalty program portals, and booking sites. Google is now consolidating several of those steps inside AI Mode in Search, with three new capabilities announced in August 2026 by James Byers, Group Product Manager for Search.
The additions build on AI Mode's existing ability to compare flights and hotels using real-time data. The new features let users set price alerts, check redemption costs in points or miles, and complete hotel bookings — all within the same conversational interface.
Flight Price Tracking Without Leaving the Conversation
Google Flights has offered price tracking for some time, but it previously required users to navigate to a separate tool. That feature is now available directly inside AI Mode. Users can describe a trip — destination, dates, preferences — and AI Mode will surface options drawing on data from more than 300 partner airlines and travel sites.
If a user isn't ready to commit, they can ask AI Mode to track prices for those specific flights. After confirming, they receive an email notification if prices change for the chosen route and dates. Google reports this feature is now available in more than 180 countries and territories.
One practical implication for budget-conscious travelers is that this could reduce the need to manually recheck prices or maintain separate fare alert accounts — the monitoring happens in the background after a single conversational request.
Seeing the Real Cost in Points and Miles
Loyalty program redemptions are notoriously difficult to compare because each program has its own rates, and those rates can vary by route, date, and availability. AI Mode now surfaces the points or miles cost for flights and hotels alongside cash prices, pulling data directly from partner programs.
The feature launched with support for Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, American Airlines, Choice Hotels International, Hilton, and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. Google has indicated that Accor, Flying Blue, Hyatt, LATAM Airlines, and Lufthansa Group will be added in the coming weeks. Points and miles display is described as globally available, with the caveat that some features are not available in EEA countries and territories.
For someone with American Airlines miles, the experience could look like asking AI Mode to find nonstop flights from Atlanta to Miami on specific dates using those miles — and seeing the mileage cost for matching options immediately, with a link to complete the redemption on the partner site.
This may be particularly useful for travelers who hold multiple loyalty currencies and want a quick way to compare whether a cash fare or a points redemption makes more sense for a given trip, without logging into each program separately.
Hotel Booking Inside the Conversation
The third capability is hotel booking completed through AI Mode itself. After describing a trip and preferences, users receive a visual list of hotels with guest reviews and comparison details. When they find a suitable option, they can ask AI Mode to help complete the booking.
Selecting "Continue on Google" from the booking options initiates a checkout flow that includes choosing a room type, reviewing the cancellation policy, and paying via Google Pay. Google notes that the hotel or booking platform remains the merchant of record and handles customer service — so the transaction and any post-booking support run through the partner, not Google directly.
Launch partners for hotel booking include Booking.com, Choice Hotels International, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International, Priceline, Trip.com, and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. This feature has started rolling out in the U.S. in English and is described as becoming available over the coming weeks.
How These Features Fit Together
Taken individually, none of these capabilities is entirely new — price alerts, points calculators, and hotel booking widgets have existed across various platforms for years. What Google is assembling is a single conversational layer where a user can move from initial research through to a completed booking without switching contexts.
The examples suggest a design goal of reducing friction at each decision point: tracking prices requires only a conversational confirmation, checking rewards costs happens alongside cash prices rather than in a separate lookup, and booking a hotel can be completed without leaving the interface where the search began.
For beginners or occasional travelers who find loyalty programs confusing or who lose track of price-checking across multiple sites, the consolidation could lower the effort involved in making informed decisions. That said, the feature set is still rolling out, partner coverage is not universal, and EEA users face availability restrictions — so the experience will vary depending on location and which loyalty programs a traveler actually holds.
What to Understand Before Relying on It
A few practical conditions are worth keeping in mind. Hotel booking through AI Mode is in early rollout, limited to the U.S. in English at launch. Points and miles data comes from partner integrations, so programs not yet listed won't appear. Flight price tracking covers more than 300 partners but is not exhaustive of every airline or booking platform.
Google Pay is required for the in-mode hotel checkout, which may not suit every user. And because the hotel or booking platform acts as the merchant, any issues with a reservation — changes, cancellations, disputes — would be handled by that partner rather than through Google.
For travelers already comfortable using Google Flights or Google Hotels, these additions represent a meaningful expansion of what's possible without leaving Search. For those new to AI-assisted planning, the conversational format may make it easier to explore options without needing to know exactly which tool to use first.
