Google has introduced Google Pics, a new AI image tool designed to let users generate and edit images using text prompts, without leaving the apps where they already work. The tool is built on Google's Nano Banana image generation and editing model and is accessible at pics.new.

What Google Pics Can Do

The tool centers on precise, prompt-driven editing rather than requiring users to build images from scratch. Key capabilities include object segmentation, which lets users isolate a specific part of an image and apply targeted changes without affecting the rest; in-image text editing and translation, which modifies or translates text inside an image while preserving the original font and layout; and multi-generation, where a single prompt produces several image variations to choose from. Users can also collaborate with teammates on the same image in real time.

Workspace Integration

Google Pics is designed as both a standalone product and an embedded feature within Google Workspace. Integration with Docs and Slides is live now, meaning users can generate and edit images directly inside those applications. Drive integration is described as rolling out in the coming weeks. Google notes that millions of users interact with billions of images across Workspace products monthly, framing the embedded approach as a way to remove the friction of switching between tools.

Who Gets Access and When

Google Pics is rolling out over the coming weeks to all Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers and most Workspace business customers. The rollout is not described as complete or immediate for all users, so availability may vary depending on account type and timing.

What to Watch

The Drive integration and the breadth of the Workspace rollout are the near-term details worth tracking. For teams that already produce visual content inside Docs or Slides — slide decks, documents with custom graphics, social media assets — the embedded editing capability could reduce reliance on separate design tools, though whether it meets professional design needs will depend on individual use cases. The Nano Banana model powering Pics is not yet widely documented publicly, so its performance relative to other AI image tools remains to be seen in practice.
